At Austin Pets Alive on Lucky’s adoption day!

Yesterday on DogTipper, I talked about 25 things you might not know about us and our dog site…so today’s it’s the cats’ turn! As I mentioned in that post, one of my goals for this year is to be more personal, sharing more about our lives and our cats whenever we can.

It’s interesting because, through most of our years freelancing, we were NOT to be included as part of the story. As journalists, our role was to report a story, not to be a part of it.

Of course, things have really changed.

So, in response, we’re going to try to include a more personal slant on our coverage here on CatTipper…starting off with this list of 25 things you just might not know about us and our cats:

  1. John and I were travel guidebook writers for 20 years before switching to pet writing.
  2. My first cat was named Cheeto. He was a Maine Coon mix.
  3. Our cats are indoor-only cats but they do have a catio which they love.
  4. John built our catio…and our home!
  5. John and I have his and hers offices, separated by an open gallery we use for photographing products.
  6. We live in the country, and we’re surrounded by an endangered bird preserve for Golden-Cheeked Warblers.
  7. John is a better photographer than I am.
  8. Previously we’ve had two outdoor cats who came to us as strays: Elaine and KitKat. Both were eventually moved indoors.
  9. It’s rare for an evening to go by without hearing coyotes near our home.
  10. Our first website was started in 1998 and was hand-coded; today it’s our brochure site for our freelance writing.
  11. Today we use WordPress and love it.
  12. We’re very much a DIY operation and do our own design, coding, PR, and all the behind the scenes work.
  13. Inca is named for a location we visited in Puente del Inca, Argentina.
  14. Coco is named for the three spots on her head that look much like a coconut.
  15. Linus is our most talkative cat.
  16. Lucky is the most outgoing cat we’ve ever had!
  17. Our home is largely heated by a wood stove; Inca and Coco like to lie on the rocks behind it.
  18. Inca seems to be able to hear the sound of a hairbrush from anywhere in the house and will run up and insist on being brushed.
  19. Inca and Lucky are the closest of our cats with our dogs Tiki and Irie. Inca often grooms the dogs, and Lucky likes to play with them.
  20. Linus remembers our travel writing days when we traveled once a month. If he sees luggage, he gets sad…
  21. Coco was a originally a stray cat; she was found by our neighbor at the post office and weighed under one pound at the time. A female cat, we believe her mother, had been run over in front of the post office.
  22. Linus is named for the Peanuts character because he was Felix’s little brother.
  23. Our late, great Felix was a feral cat; it took him about two years to trust us but then he was incredibly bonded with us. We miss him every day.
  24. Coco likes to slap paper as it comes out of the printer! I don’t take this as a statement on the quality of our writing…
  25. Inca’s favorite toy is a pipe cleaner.
