Cookie cutters: they’re not just for cookies anymore! We have a lot of cookie cutters in our PetTipper store and were looking for a fun way to incorporate them in our holiday plans here at our house. I ran across a Martha Stewart tutorial about making ornaments from cookie cutters and thought I’d give it a try. It was quick and easy, a great way to enjoy some of your photos on the tree!

Step One: Trace and cut the photo

CT-step1

I printed out a photo of Lucky looking directly at the camera, printing it in a 5″ size. The size and layout of the photo will depend on your cookie cutter. I used a 2.5″ Paw cutter from our store.

Once I decided on the positioning, I traced around the outside of the cutter, with the sharp side of the cutter down against the paper. Cut out the photo along the lines.

Step Two: Cut out the backing

For the backing of your ornament, you can use gift wrapping paper or, as I did, an old Christmas card. The heavy paper made the perfect backing. Be sure to flip your cookie cutter over so the sharp side of the cutter is now facing up or you can do as I and use the photo you just cut out as a template, flipping it face down. (Lucky decided he needed to help with this step.)

Step Three: Attach a Hanger

I used about a foot-long piece of curling ribbon, taped to the inside of the backing, to create a hanger. You can also tape it on the backing itself, as we did on our DogTipper ornament.

Step Four: Glue the Backing and the Photo

I used a glue stick to attach the photo and the backing.

Step Five: Glue the Cutter to the Photo

Again using the glue stick, I ran a thin line of glue around the edge of the cutter before pressing it onto the face of the photo, smoothing off the extra once attached. Allow it to try at least two hours before hanging. Enjoy your new cat ornament!
