BIG, DEEP litter boxes, at least one per cat. Open, not covered – many of them like to stand on the edge while going. Don’t make them squeeze into a little, covered box. Big tip — clean the litter. No really, just do it, daily. The litter lasts longer and the cat(s) don’t have to step in filth to go potty. Good toys, so many toys at the pet stores are made for humans, not cats :-) I would love to write a little article about cat toys.

  • debbie

I would say a variety of different kinds of toys. Every cat seems to have a preference, some like balls, mice, etc, so that way you can find out what your cat likes. A cat that has been played with, is a happy cat.

Air freshener, litter, lots of treats, food, lots of toys, and a brush!

  • Devri Owens

I think there are 3 very important items you need when bringing a kitty into your home: 1) a big, deep litter box (helps them learn and feel comfortable in the box); 2) a litter catcher pad to put in front of the box to catch the litter that comes out when the cat jumps out of the box (that way they don’t get so much on the floor in front of the box and think they can “go” there); and 3) a scratching post. So important to teach the kitties not to scratch up your furniture! I follow on Twitter and I get the emails! Very helpful information!

  • Nancy Stymacks

Kitty chow & lots of treats!

Before I brought my girl home I went to PetSmart and got fun toys and a top-entry litter box (because I also have a curious Cocker Spaniel),the food the foster had been feeding her ,food and water bowls and I already had all the love I could give her so that part was covered !

  • Karen & John

    Food & water bowl!

  • Karen & John

  • Kimberly Matlock

Cats will need a food and water bowl, of course! And if your kitty likes running water, you’d want a fountain instead of a bowl. Just as important would be a break-away collar and ID so that should Kitty get lost, and you haven’t microchipped her yet, someone will be able to bring her home to you! And thirdly, you must have flea medication. Preventative medicine shouldn’t be overlooked. It’ll save you and Kitty a lot of pain and heartache!

    • Kimberly Matlock

Oh, and how could I forget to mention a good sized litter box and litter? :)

  • Linda Synnott

I would suggest a deep litterbox and “good” litter. the cheaper one will work but it’ll get all over and not cover up the smell. you also might invest in a litter trapper. its a rubber mat you put in front of the litter box so when your cat gets out the litter inside its paws falls out here instead of all over. don’t forget kitty toys and of course CATNIP!!!
