The Craziest Things Cats Eat! #Petcurean

In our “blended household” of cats and dogs, we know firsthand that pets can eat some unusual things. Although our dogs are more likely to decide a pair of sunglasses is a chew toy, our cats have done their share of inappropriate eating as well.

We found that, for all of the unusual dining selections our pets may have made through the years, they’re nothing as extreme as some of the “delicacies” that a new survey of American pet owners has discovered.

Petcurean, maker of GO! and NOW FRESH recipes for cats (and dogs), found these unusual dietary choices by American pets:

  • underwear (12 percent of those surveyed)
  • books (8%)
  • wallets (3 %)

The list didn’t stop there…it also included zippers, back scratchers, hair brushes, flip flops, video games, shoes, socks and jewelry.

Bones?

We found out the hard way–with a $1000 veterinary bill because of three cracked/abscessed teeth on our dog Irie–that bones can be an expensive choice for pets. “Possible broken teeth, mouth or tongue injuries and bones getting stuck in your dog’s windpipe are just a few reasons why they are a no- no for pets,” says Michele Dixon, Health and Nutrition Specialist with Petcurean. Surprisingly, the survey showed that nearly a quarter (24 per cent) thought bones were healthy for pets.

How About Pumpkin?

Have you fed your cat pumpkin? Or cranberries? If so, you’re in the minority. Just 4% have fed cranberries and only 9% have served up pumpkin…but both make a great addition to your cat’s diet. Both are found in both GO! and NOW FRESH recipes. “Pumpkin is good for your pet’s digestion and is high in Vitamin A and beta-carotene, while cranberries are high in antioxidants and are a good source of fibre, Vitamin C and Vitamin K,” says Dixon.
