Courageous Feline Wins Hero Cat Award

CatsCatTipper continues our look at the winners of Cats Protection’s recent National Cat Awards by shining a spotlight on the calico who claimed the title of Hero Cat at the celebrity-attended biennial presentation, which took place at London’s Savoy Hotel:

She may not possess the power to talk with her pet parents in the same language, but on the day 15-year-old Cleo the cat communicated her concern for one of her family members her actions spoke volumes about her love for her humans.

When Cleo realized that Richard Jenkins was ill, she began behaving in a peculiar manner, racing up and down the stairs in an effort to alert her human mother. Discovering her husband in severe pain, Pauline Jenkins called the paramedics, and even amid the hustle and bustle of their arrival at the home, the faithful feline– who, like many cats, are fearful of new people and situations– stayed by Richard’s side. Cleo’s quick thinking saved Richard Jenkins, who had suffered a heart attack, and her reassuring presence helped her pet parent on his road to recovery.

Actress Carley Stenson, who starred in the British soap opera Hollyoaks and on stage in West End renditions of Shrek and Spamalot, stepped into her real life role as an animal advocate to select Cleo the winner of the Hero Cat category, stating that: “Cleo overcame her own fear of strangers to help her beloved owner. She saved his life. It was just that one factor that pushed it for me.”

The National Cat Awards are presented by Cats Protection, the United Kingdom’s leading feline welfare charity which helps over 218,000 cats and kittens in need annually at 31 adoption centers.
