Rachael Ray celebrated the start of her hit daytime talk show’s ninth season on September 15th, and on October 7th it was announced that 68,805 cats and dogs are celebrating the start of new lives with forever pet parents thanks to the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.

Its fifth year now complete, the three-month long adopt-a-thon for 50 participating shelters and rescue organizations across the country increased the number of companion animals who found loving homes by 16,789 over the same time period in 2013. Since its start, the lives of more than a quarter of a million have been saved due to the challenge.

This year’s $100,000 grand prize was awarded to Central California SPCA in Fresno, California, which saved a total of 2,640 pets in need, while the $25,000 Community Engagement Award was presented to Kansas City Pet Project in Kansas City, Missouri. Over the course of the contest’s five-year run, the ASPCA and Rachael Ray have awarded more than $2 million to shelters in 38 states.
