In August 2016 sports fans will gather around their television sets to watch athletes from around the globe compete for gold at the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro, and fans of felines will cluster in a clowder around their TVs as well for the golden opportunity to cheer for adorable, adoptable amateur cathletes who will try to claw their way to greatness in a sporting event of epic purrportions– the Hallmark Channel’s inaugural Kitten Summer Games.

The network, which recently combined football and felines for the ratings-winning Kitten Bowl II, has just unleashed the news that hundreds of competipurrs won’t be kitten around when they get the chance to show off their skills in the de-cat-lon, gymnastics, freestyle wrestling, track and field, balance beam, floor exercises, sprints and other sports.

More than 20 North Shore Animal League America shelter partners tackled the topic of pet homelessness by finding forever homes for hundreds of cats in need at Kitten Bowl II viewing parties, and Hallmark Channel hopes that even more shelters will get in the game and host adoption parties during the network’s upcoming sports-themed special.

“With an innovative Special Event like Kitten Summer Games, we have the opportunity to not only entertain, but also showcase how extraordinarily talented shelter pets are and how capable they are to compete in a global sporting event equal to their human counterparts,” Media Family Networks President and CEO, Bill Abbott, stated.

“With our phenomenal shelter partners, Crown Media Family Networks is having a positive impact on rescuing animals from high kill shelters and significantly increasing the numbers of shelter pet adoptions. The Gold Medial glory we seek is to end pet homelessness forever.”
