Offering an assist to cats and dogs in need, Riley Sheahan of the Detroit Red Wings recently teamed up with The Michigan Humane Society to launch the Riley’s Rescues program.

Each time the celebrated center scores a point during the 2014/2015 NHL season, the animal welfare organization will receive a donation of $100 for its animal cruelty investigation unit. The sports figure is also promoting the option of pet adoption by shining a spotlight on a different adorable adoptable companion animal each month.

Far from the first animal-loving athlete to show support for the Michigan Humane Society, former Detroit Red Wing Kirk Maltby warmed the hearts of dog devotees when he helped the organization insulate dog houses with straw and loaded donated dog and cat food for the non-profit’s free pet food bank during the 2013 Fill the Truck event, and NFL player Golden Tate of the Detroit Lions recently tackled the demands of foster parenting when he and his girlfriend Elise Pollard welcomed into their home an English Bulldog named Rosie from the renowned organization.

Established in 1877, Michigan Humane Society is the largest and oldest animal welfare organization in the state.
