After a successful seven-year run as The Algonquin Hotel’s DirectFUR of Guest Relations, Matilda III has decided to bow out of the world stage, but before beginning her well-earned life of leisure the rescued Ragdoll helped to shine a spotlight on pet adoption at her annual celebration and cat fashion show.
Making her last fundraising fete a “Memory” to last a lifetime, this year’s purrty theme was Tony Award-winning musicals, complete with a plethora of MEW-dels in Ada Nieves attire paying tribute to such Broadway plays as Cabaret, Les Miserables, The Music Man, The King and I, Dear Evan Hanson and of course, CATS.
A rescue cat from North Shore Animal League America, Matilda III’s purrties have always helped her fellow felines. This year’s ticket sales and event raffles raised $12,000 for Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, a non-profit which helps a coalition of more than 150 area rescue organizations and animal shelters that are working toward the goal of making The Big Apple a no-kill city.
While couture-conscious kitties showed off their sense of style inside the iconic Manhattan hotel, parked outside The Algonquin a mobile pet adoption unit proved that compassion is always in fashion. Thanks to exposure from the fundraising event three adorable adoptables from Linda’s Feral Cat Assistance found forever families to love!
While the curtain is closing on Matilda III’s reign as the AlgonQUEEN, the fundraiser marked the debut of The Algonquin’s next DirectFUR of Guest Relations, a cat named after Shakespeare’s Prince of Denmark, Hamlet. Taking on the role of DirectFUR of Guest Relations from the retiring Matilda III, Hamlet (a rescue cat from Bideawee) will be following in the paw prints of the hotel’s previous seven male cats who have answered to the same moniker–a tradition which began with renowned actor John Barrymore naming the first ‘Hamlet’ in the 1930s. So as cat lovers everywhere say “Bravo!” to Matilda III for a job well done, we also applaud the arrival of The Algonquin Hotel’s newest star, Hamlet!
