TrustedHousesitters Most Popular Cat Names by State

Top cat names by state

While the list of top names is fairly consistent year to year, the order of those most popular cat names varies from state to state. The 2023 Pet Names Study by TrustedHousesitters analyzed over 50,000 pet names registered in the TrustedHousesitters platform.

The study showed that the five most popular boy cat names are Charlie, Leo, Max, Milo, and Jack. The five most popular girl cat names are Luna, Lucy, Bella, Sophie, and Stella

But that popularity varies by state and even by city.

“While working with pets and pet owners across the country for over 14 years, I’ve always been exposed to the up-and-coming popular names,” noted TrustedHousesitters Head of Community Angela Laws. But it’s been even more exciting to see what our data has to say about 2023 pet names in this study. One of the most interesting finds is how pet name trends vary not only on a state level but a city level, with trends uniquely representing the culture and famous characteristics of each city.”

According to T.S. Eliot, the author of Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, “The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter/It isn’t just one of your holiday games/You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter/When I tell you, a cat must have three different names.”

The monikers mentioned include (1) a sensible name for every day use, (2) an appellation of distinction, and (3) a “name that no human research can discover — but the cat himself knows, and will never confess.”

While we may not ever find out the secret sobriquets of our pals who meow, but let’s look at those sensible names. Did your cat’s name make the list?
