Mayim Bialik – Celebrity Cat Hero

Share with fellow cat lovers!

A friend to all with fur, fins and feathers, over the years actress Mayim Bialik has used her star wattage to shine a spotlight on various paws causes, among them veganism, the struggle to put an end to the fur trade and animal testing, and finding forever homes for our feline friends. A cat mom herself, Bialik is the first in our spotlight of celebrity cat heroes, stars who have shined their star wattage to help cats.

Here’s a look back at some of Bialik’s cat advocacy activities through the years:

Mayim Bialik Adopts Cat with Special Needs

Fans of Mayim Bialik, who tickled our collective funny bone each week with her portrayal of neurobiologist Amy Farrah Fowler on the popular CBS comedy series The Big Bang Theory, were tickled pink over the news that the actress recently adopted a cat with special needs.

From Captain America’s shield to Wolverine’s skeleton and claws, the fictional metal alloy Adamantium has molded itself into Marvel Comics’ lore.

The star chose the moniker for her new cat due to the fact that the kitten has metal inside of her as a means of protection. Born without a pectoral muscle, Adamantium is currently wearing a temporary cast.

Adamantium (Addie for short) found her new famous fur Mom thanks to Shelter Chic, a foster-based rescue in New York City. Literally proving that trends may come and go, but compassion will always stay in fashion, the non-profit shows off adoptables in style, with cats and dogs donning fetching attire to meet prospective pet parents.

Mayim Bialik and PetSmart Charities Promote Cat Adoption

Her character on The Big Bang Theory once stated “I love cats. They’re the epitome of indifference.”

However, in her real life role as a pet parent to former feral cat Frances, actress Mayim Bialik– who portrayed Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler on the hit CBS comedy series– knows the true loving nature of our cat companions, and  is  helping to put an end to the antiquated stereotypes which have dogged both our purring pals and all of us who care for kitties.

“Frances has taught me a lot about patience and love and has been an incredible addition to our family,” said Mayim, who is a pet adoption advocate.

“Adopting not only saves the life of a deserving pet, but it changes the lives of those who choose to adopt, as well.”

In a PetSmart Charities survey, cat lovers have been revealed to be intelligent, independent, friendly, outgoing and on top of trends– a far cry from the cliché of the quirky, antisocial cat person, while the myth of cats as shy, aloof and stubborn has also been debunked in the eyes of many of the survey’s respondents.

To celebrate our individual diversity and our shared love for our feline friends, Mayim Bialik partnered with PetSmart Charities to encourage all cat devotees to MeowOUT ourselves in a declaration of cat pride.

“Mayim embodies a new kind of cat person– one that is chic, smart and proud to share her love of cats,”  PetSmart Charities senior director of programs, Julie White, stated.  “We’re thrilled to have Mayim spread her ‘cat pride’ and help encourage others to consider saving a life by adopting.”

Mayim Bialik Visits Best Friends’ Sanctuary

The Big Bang Theory‘s Mayim Bialik, who has earned four Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, recently showed her support for the lifesaving efforts of Best Friends Animal Society by paying a visit to the non-profit organization’s sanctuary in Kanab, Utah.

Sharing a segment of her stay with fans via her vlog, the star highlights sightings of rescued ponies, goats, sheep, pigs and cats, and expresses her excitement over her visit to the medical animal clinic.

A Mom to multiple rescue cats (including Adamantium, a cat with special needs), animal welfare issues are close to Mayim Bialik’s heart. Over the years she has used her star wattage to shine a spotlight on veganism, efforts to end both animal testing and the fur trade, and finding forever homes for our feline friends.

Visiting Best Friends Animal Society’s Sanctuary

From visiting to volunteering, Best Friends Animal Society’s sanctuary in Kanab, Utah welcomes thousands of pals to those with paws each year. Free, two-hour guided van tours of Angel Canyon, with stops to meet some of the facility’s more than 1,600 furry or fine- feathered residents, take place daily.

Fans of felines age 12 and over may want to attend the special tour of Cat World Headquarters, which is offered three times a week…

…while devotees of dogs might wish to embark on a tour of Dogtown, which is offered each Monday through Friday.

Animal lovers can also pay their respects to the cats and dogs who have crossed Rainbow Bridge while at the sanctuary by taking the Angels Rest walking tour, which allows attendees a peaceful place to reflect as their thoughts are serenaded by the tinkle of 1,400 wind chimes.

Volunteer opportunities for those who want to give the gift of their time to the paws cause include cleaning animal areas, grooming, feeding, and socializing animals. There is a minimum age requirement for each animal area, with Cat World requiring that a volunteer be at least six years old.

Animal lovers can even jump into their jammies and spend the night in one of the sanctuary’s cottages with an adorable, adoptable purring pal or barking buddy! Best Friends’ Sleepover Program helps to provide staff with insight into an animal’s reaction to home-like surroundings, and gives both the visitor and the animal the chance to make a new friend.
