What It Is: rechargeable sweeper for quick pickups

Manufacturer: Bissell

CatTipper Review: Years ago as a child, we had a carpet sweeper and I often had the job of using it to clean the floor. It was one of those old-fashioned manual sweepers that you pushed to make the brush rotate…then you went over and over the same spot because it just didn’t seem to be picking up. With that memory in the back of my mind, I had steered clear of carpet sweepers as an adult.

But I’ve just made an important discovery: those carpet sweepers have come a long, long way.

I just tried the Bissell Perfect Sweep Turbo, a rechargeable sweeper that’s intended for quick pick-ups (like that kicked cat litter that will otherwise wind up tracked all over the house). This might look like the old-fashioned carpet sweeper but that’s where any similarity ends.

I love this little machine.

Super light, the Perfect Sweep Turbo is perfect for pet households where vacuuming isn’t a weekly but an almost daily duty. When you don’t want to go to the trouble to drag out the full-sized vacuum, this little rechargeable cordless is the answer for vacuuming up that kicked cat litter, spilled dry food, or rolling balls of fur that seem to appear out of nowhere.

I put the Perfect Sweep Turbo to the test by the litter boxes (not one, mind you, but three litter boxes). We use tall-sided litter boxes but there is always litter on the floor surrounding the boxes.

The Perfect Sweep Turbo did a great job, picking up the litter (and not kicking it across the room as we’ve seen with some vacuums). In just a few minutes, all the loose litter was securely tucked into the easy to empty bin:

Along with vacuuming up the scattered litter, I noticed another great feature about this little sweeper: it is quiet. Really quiet. Our cats and dogs don’t like the noise of the full-sized vacuum but didn’t pay this sweeper any attention.

Next, I put it to the test in the living room. Our cats spend much of their time in this combination dining room/living room so there is always plenty of cat hair. One problem area we always have: underneath the couch. I found a great feature of the Perfect Sweep Turbo: it lies completely flat! The handle tipped completely down and I was able to vacuum underneath the couch without moving any furniture!

After the living room, I tried it on a bedroom rug. This was the only place I ran into a little slowdown; one of the rugs is extra deep and I had some trouble pushing the sweeper although it worked great to pull the sweeper toward me. After the super deep rug, I tried a regular rug where Linus had pulled out a batch of hair (his barbering habit suddenly came back this week although his is still on his medication). The hair was vacuumed up in a snap.

Finally, it was time to try it out on the stairs to the office. This is another problem area; I guess it has to do with the air flow and the central AC but hair congregates on the stairs. We usually have to take the broom and sweep the stairs since it’s impossible to get the full-sized vacuum onto the stairs without a lot of work.

The Perfect Sweep Turbo did great! The handle can be removed (there’s a quick release button on the side) to convert it into a handheld sweeper.

The battery has a charge that should last through 60 minutes of cleaning time. The dirt cup was very easy to empty and held quite a bit of litter and hair (and dirt).

A big paws up for the Bissell Perfect Sweep Turbo!

Price: $39.99
