felix-paperWe never intended to have four indoor cats, it just sort of happened! We adopted Felix when our beloved Kit Kat passed away because we wanted another tuxedo male, then we adopted Linus to keep Felix company. Paris found Inca staring out the window at our local shelter and couldn’t resist bringing her home. Then, one Saturday morning, our neighbor stopped by with a shoebox containing a tiny, white kitten he had found at the post office. He knew we were cat people and just wondered if we had room for one more…and Coco became part of our family, too.

We love our cats and we try to provide the best possible care for them. It’s just that, well, they have us outnumbered. Although we have our care routine streamlined, their daily needs still require quite a bit of time and effort. Since our cats’ ages differ widely, they have different nutritional requirements and our older guys Felix and Linus are both on daily medication.

We know that some cat owners are able to avoid this issue by allowing their cats outdoor access but this is not an option for us due to the large coyote population in our area. And, because we live in a bird sanctuary, we can’t allow our kitties to become predators themselves.

Daily litter box maintenance is an essential chore around our house. That means lugging heavy bags of litter in (and out!) and powering through the smelly job itself. And, since Paris has some allergy issues, it means dealing with the dust that conventional clay litter produces.

Fortunately, Cat’s Pride, a leader in the field of cat litter products has introduced Cat’s Pride® Fresh & Light® promising to help cat parents deal with these common litter box issues.

The Fresh & Light product line has several advantages over conventional clay litter:

  • For one, it is 25% lighter than conventional litter; that means that a 15-pound container of Fresh & Light is comparable to 20 pounds of regular cat litter. To litter box wranglers, that means a lot less work when bringing in new litter and disposing of the old.
  • Fresh & Light is also super-clumping to make scooping out extra easy.
  • It is formulated to be low-dust. That means not only that the litter box location stays cleaner but also makes changing the litter less sneeze inducing.

Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light litter is available in two formulations, Multi-Cat, with odor control and Fragrance-Free and is sold in five different sizes ranging from 11- to 28-pound containers. It is the only litter recommended by the American Humane Association.

linus-closeupWith those considerations in mind, we were definitely interested in trying these litter products out on our own cat clowder. We received 15-pound containers of both the Multi-Cat and Fragrance-Free formulations of Fresh & Light litters and set them out for use. We noticed right away how much lighter these litters are and also noted the absence of dust when filling the litter trays. The Multi-Cat version has a nice, clean fragrance out of the jug, while the Fragrance-Free was appropriately neutral smelling. So far, so good; then we waited for nature to take its course.

The next day, after all our cats had had a chance to use the litter, we examined the litter boxes. We confirmed that the clumping action was as extensive as the company claimed, clumping “almost as hard as a hockey puck.” And, our litter area (which is also our laundry room) was noticeably dust-free. Based on their use, our cats seemed to prefer the Fragrance-Free litter but they had used both trays. As a further test, we did not change the litter after the first day and found that on day two the area still had very little offensive smell, a big improvement.
