Hydrating Your Cat with Wet Food

Share with fellow cat lovers!

Rachael Ray Nutrish has sponsored this post, but all opinions are my own.

Water, water, everywhere–and sometimes it’s so tough to get cats to drink!

Like all cat families, we struggle with making sure our cats drink enough water through the day. We have a water fountain for them as well as several bowls, so each cat has a hydration choice.

But we also rely on wet cat food to supply a portion of each day’s water needs. Canned cat food contains close to 80 percent moisture, a tasty way to provide water as part of your cat’s diet.

Our cats love Nutrish, inspired by recipes from Rachael Ray’s own kitchen. I love that the meals are made with real chicken or seafood–an ingredient that’s easy to spot. It’s equally important what you WON’T see in Nutrish; there’s never any grains, meat by-products or fillers, artificial flavors, colors or artificial preservatives–only essential vitamins and minerals.

The wet food comes in a wide range of recipes:

  • Chicken & Shrimp Pawttenesca™
  • Chicken & Salmon Catterole™
  • Chicken Purrcata®
  • Paw Lickin’ Chicken & Liver
  • Tuna Purrfection™
  • Ocean Fish-a-licious®
  • Lip Smackin’ Sardine ‘N Mackerel
  • Ocean Fish & Chicken Catch-iatore
  • Chicken Lovers Variety Pack
  • Ocean Lovers Variety Pack

I like to switch up the varieties with our cats, choosing one at their morning meal and a different recipe for the evening meal. They each have their favorites, but Lucky might be partial to Ocean Fish and Chicken Catch-iatore!

Regardless of which flavor is your cat’s favorite, don’t forget that as with all the Nutrish foods, Rachael Ray’s proceeds from each sale are donated to homeless pets–over $10 million so far!

A Fun DIY Project to Encourage Your Cat to Drink

The peel-off top of the Nutrish food makes mealtime easy (no can openers!) but the fun’s not over when the meal is done.

Since some of the gravy and bits of the meal remain in the tub, I add about half an inch of water to the used tub then pop it in the freezer. After a few hours, the result is a tasty frozen ice cube for the cats to enjoy as a toy before it becomes a tasty drink. I also add the cubes to their fountain and water bowls, encouraging them to drink more water!
