7 Ways to Prevent Litter Box Odor

Share with fellow cat lovers!

Let’s face: litterboxes can stink. You scoop and scoop

But that list does NOT include the odor of the litter box!

To keep your litter box smelling fresh, we’ve got a list of our favorite ways to keep the litter boxes odor free!

This post is sponsored by TriNova; all statements and opinions are entirely our own.

Absorb rather than deodorize the odors.

Even though you diligently scoop the litter box, the odor can remain–but we’ve found the answer: TriNova Litter Box Deodorizer.

We never recommend litterbox deodorizers–because cats don’t like them. But ABSORBING the odor instead of masking it is a great solution.

Made using processed corn cobs, this litter box deodorizer is 100% Bio-Based and hypoallergenic.

It’s also fragrance free, which is critically important around the litterbox. Deodorizers with fragrance can discourage some cats from using the litterbox–definitely NOT your goal!

Instead of fragrance that masks odors, the made in the USA TriNova Litter Box Deodorizer absorbs the odors, neutralizing any bad smells. Just sprinkle it on top of the litter after scooping, extending the lifespan of the litter.

Scoop, scoop, scoop and dispose properly.

Scoop the litterbox even more frequently during warm weather–and, once you do scoop, make sure the waste is in an air-tight container.

If you’re bagging the waste, be sure you tightly knot the bag to trap in the odors and keep out insects.

It’s not uncommon for your wastebasket to begin to smell as it accumulates that bagged waste. You can use TriNova Litter Box Deodorizer in the bottom of your trash can to absorb odors there, as well.

Consider the litterbox placement.

Are your litter boxes located in well-ventilated areas?

While your cat may be accepting of a laundry room or garage placement, these often poorly-ventilated areas can get pretty ripe due to poor air flow. Locating your litter box near vents can help the problem.

Add a litterbox.

The rule of thumb (or paw) is one litter box per cat plus one.

One cat? Two litter boxes. Three cats? Four litter boxes. Be sure you have enough litter boxes to adequately serve your feline population.

Also, some cats like to pee in one box and poop in another; this arrangement helps give your cat some options and spreads the activity around, preventing too much odor buildup in one area.

Clean around the litterbox.

Trinova pet stain and odor remover

We all blame the litter box for the odor…but sometimes the odor comes from around and beneath the litter box as well as the area where your cat walks immediately after departing the litter box!

I use TriNova Natural Pet Stain Remover, a stain remover that is designed to eliminate the source of the odor, to clean around each of our litter boxes.  This all-natural cleaner, formulated to be safe for our pets, cleans, rather than deodorizes the stained area, preventing re-marking of the same spots. The spray is easy to use: Spray around the litter box and wait 1-2 minutes. Gently scrub with a rag or soft brush. Blot up any excess product with a dry towel and allow the area to air dry before you cover it with the litter box.

Along with urine and feces stains, this cleaner is also excellent for cleaning up hairball stains! Give it a squirt from the handy spray bottle; you can also purchase the pet stain remover in a gallon-sized bottle for refills.

Wash the litter box.

It’s not enough to scoop the litter box and freshen the litter; be sure to wash the litter box as well every time you completely change out the litter.

For deep cleaning, use TriNova Natural Pet Stain Remover to clean the stains that have sunk deep into the scratches in the bottom of the litter box! The scratches in the bottom of the box will hold bacteria and odor.

Like the Litter Box Deodorizer, TriNova Natural Pet Stain Remover is–you guessed it–all natural.

TriNova’s Pet Stain & Odor Remover is an enzyme-based formula designed to combat organic stains and odors left behind by pets. This safe-to-use spray eliminates messes left by urine, feces, vomit and saliva left on any surface that can be dampened without harm. Upon contact with the problem area, enzymatic bacteria immediately break down stains and odors for a clean surface and a neutral smell.

Buy a new litterbox.

For all the scooping and washing, eventually the litterbox will be too scratched by your cat’s digging and your cleaning efforts–and then it’s time for a new box. Plan on buying new litterboxes once a year.

With a cat litter texture and no smell, this deodorizer won’t discourage your cat from using the litter box.

In fact, we saw no difference in our cats’ reaction to the deodorizer in the litter box. They didn’t sniff at it or show any reluctance to walk on it or scratch down in it.
