When Is National Cat Day?

Share with fellow cat lovers!

OK, if you’re wondering when National Cat Day is (and, really, isn’t every day?) or when is Cat Day, the first question is where are YOU? Cats are celebrated around the world–and on different “national” and “international” cat days!

While there is an International Cat Day on August 8 and a Global Cat Day on October 16, the title of National Cat Day varies from country to country.

When is National Cat Day?

National Cat Day in the United States

In the United States, National Cat Day takes place every October 29.

This day to celebrate our cats was established in 2005 by Celebrity Pet and Family Lifestyle Expert Colleen Paige.

National Cat Day is both a celebration of own kitty companions and a reminder to remember the many cats in need of forever families– among them the approximately four million cats who enter into the U.S. shelter system each year. National Cat Day in Canada

In Canada, National Cat Day is celebrated on August 8, the same day the US celebrates International Cat Day.

As in the US, the Canadian observation helps shine the spotlight on the many homeless cats in need of a family of their own.

Cat Day in Japan

Japan has one of the most fun and interesting dates for Cat Day: February 22. What’s interesting about that date, you may wonder?

In Japanese, the date 2/22 is pronounced ni ni ni — close to the sound of nyan nyan nyan (meow meow meow). That makes it easy to remember the date!

Walt Disney Japan also declared the day “Marie Day” in honor of Marie of The AristoCats!

This country that has embraced the cat cafe culture year around marks this day with cosplay, many people sharing photos of their cats, special cat-themed and cat-shaped foods, and special cat displays:

National Cat’s Day in Russia

March 1 is National Cat’s Day in Russia.

Do you share your heart with a Russian Blue? Mark the date on the calendar!

Cat’s Day in Poland

Poland celebrates its own Cat Day (Dzień kota) on February 17. Along with sharing photos of their own cats, cat lovers also work to publicize the many adoptable cats across Poland.

National Cat Day in Italy

Like Poland, Italy also celebrates February 17 as Cat Day.

Along with the 7.5 million household cats in Italy, this day also celebrates the nation’s street cats which have been protected by law since 1991. Street cats are spayed and neutered by public health departments, and rescue organizations are assigned management of outdoor cat colonies whose cats are allowed to roam freely with legal protections.

Along with these Cat Days, you’ll also find several National Black Cat Day observations around the world!

Wherever you live, let’s face it: every day is Cat Day when you’re a cat lover!
