What is Spot Shot® Pet Instant Carpet Stain & Odor Eliminator?

We recently had the chance to try out Spot Shot® Pet Instant Carpet Stain & Odor Eliminator. This cleaning product says it’s “designed to power out the toughest carpet stains and permanently remove even the worst stains and odors, while preventing them from returning.”

Best of all, the pet aerosol spray is non-toxic, so it’s safe to use around pets and kids.

Let’s face it: cat pee happens. While we live with our cats around the clock and become somewhat accustomed to the smell of cat urine, when visitors (especially those who don’t live with cats) come to our home, we know that they’re able to smell cat pee — in spite of our efforts to maintain a clean litterbox and clean up all pet stains.

This product really drew our eye for so many reasons:

  • Non-Toxic
  • Certified Biodegradable by Scientific Certification Systems
  • No Phosphates
  • No Volatile Organic Compounds
  • Recyclable Packaging, made with at least 33% recycled steel content
  • Not tested on animals

Why We Wanted to Give This a Try

As our regular readers know, we’ve had a very difficult past seven months with Lucky, who underwent bladder surgery last June and, ever since that time, has branched out and found alternatives to the litterboxes…on our bed (now covered by fitted waterproof sheets both below and above the covers), in corners, on rugs, on shoes…you name it.

Because of Lucky’s surgery and the fear of urinating due to the pain he experienced, he usually only urinates a puddle about the size of a fifty cent piece–but he urinates multiple times per hour in many cases. That adds up to a lot of pet stains.

We try to clean with natural cleaners such as vinegar–sometimes we have to pull out the serious cleansers.

Note: All cats can occasionally have accidents outside the box but be sure the cause isn’t medical. Read our post on Is Your Cat Peeing Outside the Litter Box? to be sure your cat isn’t experiencing a health issue and to learn how to easily collect a urine sample for testing.

Testing Spot Shot Pet

Well, we decided to put it to the test on some of our stains!

First up: cat urine. It sounded super easy to use so I first tried it on a recent urine stain on our living room rug. The directions said to spray on then blot off–no rubbing or scrubbing needed.

I sprayed the area, blotted up the excess…

…and no more smell!

OK, on to some more challenging pet stains! Along with urine, Spot Shot Pet works on feces, mud, grease, and vomit (perfect for those hairball stains!)

I decided to give it a try on an old vomit stain on my office carpet, one I have kept covered by a strategically placed box for the last several months! (No, I’m not going to win any housekeeping awards…)

You can see how dark the stain was:

I gave the stain a spray. Honestly, I didn’t have much hope for this stain because it was very old and because I’d tried to scrub out the stain in the past (and probably just rubbed the stain deeper into the carpet).

Nonetheless, I figured it was worth a try…

I used a paper towel and blotted up the foam. The result was really amazing…no more stain!
