Halloween is a time for fun–but that fun doesn’t always extend to our feline family members. Both indoor and outdoor cats are at extra risk during the Halloween season. Make sure your holiday is a treat and NOT a trick with a little pre-planning to keep your cat safe and happy on Halloween:
Watch the front door.
As if the doorbell and screams of “trick or treat” weren’t bad enough, the presence of children in costume can scare even the calmest cat. It’s all too easy for cats to run outside in the confusion.
Give your cat a quiet place for the evening.
For most cats, Halloween is a time of high stress thanks to noise, high energy levels, and often spooky costumes. It’s best let your cat rest in a quiet bedroom or, for more protection, in a large crate.
For extra safety, keep a collar and ID on him at all times.
Watch for Jack-o-Lanterns and candles.
Be sure to keep your cat away from your Halloween decorations. Lit Jack-o-Lanterns and candles present a fire hazard.
Keep your cat away from “spider’s webs” and other decorations.
Fake “spider webs”–like yarn–can be all too tempting to eat.
As with yarn, the barbs of your cat’s tongue will draw the artificial cobwebs down into her throat.
Once ingested, the trouble really begins. Gastrointestinal obstruction can occur as the webbing gets trapped into the intestines, even causing perforations.
Bring outdoor cats inside
Halloween (and the days leading up to is) is a time of way too many tricks. It’s a time when too many people plan harm to cats, especially black cats.
Please keep your cat indoors on Halloween and, if you have a black indoor/outdoor cat, please keep her indoors in the days leading up to the holiday unless under your direct supervision.
