Bagheera – The kind-hearted wild cat who befriends the “man cub” Mowgli in Disney’s The Jungle Book, Bagheera’s name means “panther” or “leopard in Hindustani. {See more Black Cat Names}

Berloiz – Named in honor of composer Hector Berloiz, this cute kitty is one of Duchess’s litter in Disney’s The Aristocats.

Black Tom – Starring in the 1948 war movie Fighter Squadron, the cat with an ink-colored coat earned $15 a day for his acting ability.

Bob – The polydactyl mini-panther from the 2022 Apple+ flick Luck speaks with the Scottish burr of actor Simon Pegg.

Cosmic Creeper — This unkempt kitty lived in the home of apprentice witch Miss Eglantine Price in the movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Figaro — Geppetto’s feline friend in Pinocchio bears a name that has become synonymous with “barber” thanks to the comedic opera The Marriage of Figaro.

Hecate – Named after the Greek goddess of the moon, crossroads and witchcraft, this black beauty starred alongside Lee Meriwether when she stepped into the cat suit for the 1966 Batman movie.

Liebchen – The Grand High Witch’s familiar in The Witches. The evil witch in the 1990 version of the Roald Dahl tale was portrayed by Academy Award winner Anjelica Huston, who happens to be an animal advocate with feline fur babies of her own.

Lucifer — Here’s a fun fact: This devilishly sneaky tuxedo cat from Cinderella was based on a polydactyl cat called Feetsy! He was the feline family member of a Disney animator who was working on the film.

Mittens — Voiced by actress Susie Essman, this teeny, tough tuxedo cat helped a dog in search of his human in Bolt.

Mr. Kittles — If you are a fan of silliness rather than scares, you might want to name your pal with paws after the kitty who starts a tongue in cheek “cat fight” in the horror movie parody Scary Movie 2.

Miss Kitty – The somber-shed cat of Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) in Batman Returns.

Oliver – This tiny cartoon tuxedo cat (whose name means both “ancestor’s descendant” and “olive or olive tree”) was reminiscent of Charles Dickens’ famous character from Oliver Twist.

Peter – Piebald performers Felix, Norbury and Windsor starred as illustrator Louis Wain’s feline friend in the biopic The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.

Scat Cat – TV/movie star and musician Scatman Crothers lent his voice to the purring trumpet player in the 1970 Disney cat film The Aristocats.

Tabitha — Actress Dee Wallace of E.T. fame provided the voice of the black cat in My Stepbrother is a Vampire?!

Thackery Binx — A boy transformed into an immortal black cat after being cursed by a witch in the Halloween season favorite, Hocus Pocus.

Winky — A black cat who befriends two extraterrestrial children in the 1975 movie Escape To Witch Mountain.

Famous Black Cats on TV

Domino – The beloved fur baby of adolescent protagonist Anne Boonchuy in the animated series Amphibia. During Anne’s other-worldy adventures she also befriended Domino’s doppelganger, a kill-a-pillar she dubbed Domino 2, and the character of The Guardian also took on the form of Boonchuy’s tuxedo cat.

Felix the Cat – This animated black cat has made people smile since 1919!

Isis – Catwoman’s purring pal has made cameos (or should that be “catmeos”) in Batman The Animated series and The New Batman Adventures. (Fans who love both cats and the Caped Crusader also got a glimpse of Isis in the 2022 blockbuster The Batman.)

King – While there may be some confusion as to whether this tiny Titan is more cat or canine-like, there’s no denying that “The King of Demons” in the cartoon The Owl House is adorable.

Kitty Kat – Morticia Adams’ feline in The Addams Family.

Miss Kitty Fantastico — Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer might remember Willow and Tara’s tiny tuxedo cat.

Plagg — This camembert-loving kitty-inspired kwami helps mild-mannered model/ French student Adrien Agreste transform into Cat Noir in the popular cartoon Miraculous: The Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir. (Plagg also makes an appearance on the big screen in Ladybug and Cat Noir: The Movie.)

Salem Saberhagen — Along with the animatronic versions of Sabrina Spellman’s cat in the classic 90s comedy series Sabrina the Teenage Witch, several former shelter cats (Elvis, a cat named Salem, Warlock and Witch) portrayed the feline with dreams of world domination. According to Vanity Fair, Warlock was also a presence on the big screen in Scary Movie 2 and The Prestige.

Snowball II — One of The Simpsons noir-shaded feline friends, each of whom was named Snowball.

Famous Black Cats

Gladstone — A rescue cat who took on the title of Chief Mouser of HM Treasury in Whitehall, London.

Hodge — Take a trip to London and you might come across the statue of a black cat named Hodge, who was a purring pal of the creator of the first English dictionary, 18th century writer Dr. Samuel Johnson.

Homer (the blind wonder cat) — His name a homage to the Greek poet who penned The Odyssey, Homer was the muse for his pet parent to write the New York Times bestseller Homer’s Odyssey.

Oscar — A black cat who made history as the first animal to receive two bionic leg implants.

Trim — This adventurous cat, who voyaged around the coast of Australia in the early 1800s, was honored with his own statue.

Black Cats from Literature and Literary Greats

Brontë — Charlotte, Emily and Anne may have lived relatively isolated lives, but the sisters never lacked for companionship thanks to their canines (Flossy, Grasper and Keeper) and cats– a tabby named Tiger and a black cat called Tom. In fact, Emily Brontë’s love for her pals who purred led her to write an essay entitled “The Cat”, in which she stated: “I can say with sincerity that I like cats; also I can give very good reasons why those who despise them are wrong.”

Catterina — Edgar Allen Poe, who penned the sinister tale “The Black Cat” was a pet parent to a purring pal with raven-hued fur. Catterina liked to sit on the writer’s shoulders, as through supervising his literary endeavors.

Slinky Malinki — Described as “blacker than black” by author Dame Lynley Dodd, the creator of the beloved Hairy Maclary series of children’s books (which includes Slinky Malinky, Slinky Malinky Open the Door, Slinky Malinki Catflaps and Slinky Malinky Early Bird), she was even made into a statue! Created by Brigitte Wuest, a sculptor who has molded the imagination of a generation of film fans through her work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, bronze depictions of Slinky and other Hairy Maclary characters can be seen in the city of Tauranga, New Zealand.

Arthur — This black and grey beauty (a female cat with a male moniker appears in the series Code Geass.

Blair — The name of the fantasy feline in Soul Eater is an homage to the modern day horror classic the Blair Witch Project.

Jiji — Phil Hartman lent his voice to an apprentice witch’s familiar in the 1989 animated American version of Kiki’s Delivery Service.

Kuroneko-sama — Japanese for “Mr. Black Cat,” this cute kitty with the Margaret Keane-style eyes can be spotted in each episode of the anime series.

Sakamoto-san — This senior black cat in Nichijou can speak with the aid of a magical red scarf.

Cole — One half of the Internet famous duo of Cole and the late, great Marmalade.

Henri, le Chat Noir — For many years this philosophical feline, who pondered the meaning of life in purrfect French, brought laughter to his fans thanks to the videos of The Thieving Filmmaker (aka Will Braden).

OwlKitty— A ‘star’ of such big screen blockbusters as Titanic and Top Gun…someone give this cat an Osc-purr!
