Simon’s Cat Logic Answers “How Do Cats Stay So Clean?”

Share with fellow cat lovers!

simon2-2Whether a cat has an easy to care for short-haired coat or the flowing fur of a feline with long hair, all of our purring pals take great pride in their appearance and work hard to maintain their manes. Cats spend approximately 10 percent of their waking hours getting their groom on, and Simon’s Cat creator Simon Tofield and Cats Protection pay tribute to kitty coifs in a new educational video, “How Do Cats Stay So Clean?”

As Cats Protection’s Behavior Manager Nicky Trevorrow explains, cats tend to start the washing process with their head and work their way down to their tail. The hooked barbs on their tongue act much like teeth on a comb, removing loose fur while stimulating natural oils to keep their coat healthy.

The video also explains the bonding benefits of social grooming (also known as allogrooming), as well as the detriment of excessive grooming.  When a cat constantly cleans one spot to the point of pulling out clumps of fur, that might mean that your feline friend is trying to ‘comb over’ an emotional and medical issue.

Along with nuggets of cat knowledge, the video also offers a chance to chuckle thanks to the Simon’s Cat clip “Pawtrait”!

“How Do Cats Stay So Clean?” is the latest comically educational Simon’s Cat Logic clips created by cartoonist Simon Tofield in order to explain the sometimes quirky comportment of our kitty companions. Other videos in the series include Why Do Cats Sleep in Unusual Places?, Do Cats Fall in Love?, Why Do Cats Love Boxes?, In or Out? Why are Cats So Indecisive? and Why Do Cats Have a ‘Crazy’ Time? The videos are made in partnership with Cats Protection, the United Kingdom’s leading feline welfare charity. Each year an estimated 200,000 cats and kittens are helped at the organization’s 32 Cats Protection adoption centers and its more than 250 volunteer-operated branches.
