Tips for Naming Your Female Cat

Naming your new cat is a big step–so feel free to take a few days to make this big decision. We always get to learn our new cat’s purrsonality a bit before choosing three or four names to try out. Here are some of the tips we use when naming a new cat in our home:

  • Consider Her Personality: Try to choose a name that matches your cat’s personality, whether she’s playful, shy (our Inca) or independent (like our girl Jetty).
  • Short and Simple: Short names, ideally one or two syllables, are generally easier for cats to recognize and respond to. If you fall in love with a longer name, though, you can create a nickname–and use both! We’ve found that cats learn nicknames well and respond to both.
  • Unique Sounds: Cats tend to respond well to names with high-pitched vowels and sibilant sounds (like “s” or “sh”), as they can differentiate them easily.
  • Avoid Common Words: Try not to choose a name that sounds like common commands or everyday words to avoid confusing your cat. “Snow” can be a difficult name because it sounds like “no.”
  • Physical Characteristics: Consider naming her based on her physical characteristics such as her fur color, pattern or eye color.
  • Avoid Names Like Others in Your Home: Be sure to avoid names that sound like — or rhyme with — the names of other people and pets in your household…or everyone will wind up confused!
  • Personal Significance: Choose a name that has personal significance or resonance for you. We have used many names related to our travels.
  • Test the Name: Before settling on a name, test it out for a few days to see if it suits your cat and if she responds to it. And, if it doesn’t stick after a while, know that you can always change your cat’s name.

Remember, the most important thing is to choose a name that you love and that feels right for your new feline friend!
